References “The technology of prenatal diagnosis is usually presented to us as a solution, but it brings with it problems of its own If you’ve already read it, you may want to skip ahead. All pregnant women in our technology-happy modern society face confusing choices about prenatal testing, its advantages and disadvantages, and its appropriateness for them. Large pregnant women face even more confusion, since prenatal testing can be slightly harder in this population, and the results can be more confusing. However, since they may be at a somewhat increased risk for problems like neural tube defects, they also face greater pressure than others to have these prenatal tests, even though the tests are often difficult to interpret. It is further designed to address the special concerns that large women might have in taking these tests their fears, any special equipment or techniques that might be helpful, the controversies over interpretation of results, whether large women have a higher rate of so-called ‘false-positives’ on certain tests and why, etc.

Visit our community What is an anomaly scan? An anomaly scan, also known as a mid-pregnancy scan, takes a close look at your baby and your womb uterus. The person carrying out the scan sonographer will check that your baby is developing normally, and look at where the placenta is lying. You can also take your partner , friend or family member along to share the experience with you.
Most technicians, if approached nicely, will agree to this.
Many mums-to-be are convinced that the angle that this nub is resting at the ‘angle of the dangle’ at their week scan, can determine the sex of the child. Skull theory Another popular theory that says you can tell your baby’s sex from the shape of their skull on the week scan. Or smaller compared to the rest of the body? Some say if you look closely this will give your baby’s gender away.
Three lines Far from being seen as just a theory, the three lines or ‘potty shot ‘ on a scan are actually often use my by midwives to tell the sex of your baby and is pretty accurate. The difference between this one and the others mentioned, though, is that you’ll need to wait until your week scan to see it – or perhaps week scan if you go to a private clinic.

Mark Webster Mark Webster is an old school Australian who is dismayed by political correctness, the state of the modern woman and the decline of his once beautiful country. He believes the collapse of the family unit is directly attributable to feminism and cultural Marxism. Thankfully, the deranged woman in question is now detained in a private mental institution, via the psych ward of a local hospital. If you currently have a female stalker, be prepared to dig in for the long haul.
So is there really such thing?
Ultrasounds in the second trimester are less accurate because babies start to grow at different rates, but are generally accurate within two weeks, plus or minus.
Based on 40 weeks pregnancy It is important to note that the calculations made by the above pregnancy calculator are only estimates based on averages. Read about in our Pregnancy Week By Week guide. To work out how many weeks pregnant you are, and your due date, you will need to know the first day of your last menstrual period LMP — when your last period began. The pregnancy calculator will also estimate the conception date.
There is no way to know that the sperm fertilised the egg on that same day — an egg can be fertilised for 24 hours after ovulation, and sperm can survive for three days after intercourse. Your due date is calculated based on the date your last period started, and assumes you have a regular cycle. The first day of your last period is considered the first day of your pregnancy.

To ultrasound or not to ultrasound? That is the question. For most pregnant mamas, ultrasounds are just a given. As a natural mama, we want to avoid as many interventions as possible during pregnancy and birth. Some studies also found that when women had an ultrasound for dating they were less likely to be induced for post-term pregnancy.
If you’re testing early, and for an accurate Weeks Indicator result, you must use the first urine of the day.
Over the next six months he’ll grow larger and stronger, getting ready for life outside your womb uterus. Tiny tooth buds are starting to appear in your baby’s mouth. Techs filled the women’s belly buttons with ultrasound transmission gel, and then a transvaginal probe was inserted into the belly button.
DIY alternatives to induction If you are desperate to see your baby, or are finding it hard to decline offers of hospital induction, then you may be considering ways to bring on labour yourself. There are plenty of links and suggestions on the UK Midwifery archives page on complementary therapies. It might be worth thinking through exactly you do not want induction in hospital.
If you would not accept medical treatment to bring on labour, what is different about using complementary therapies? Fine, if your intention is just to avoid hospital – but if you are concerned about interfering with your body’s ability to give birth, then DIY methods might not be right for you. If your baby is not ready to be born, in a difficult position , or your body is not ready to go into labour, then DIY induction might bring on a weak pre-labour which peters out.
“Overdue” – but desperate for a home birth?
The anatomy scan is a level 2 ultrasound, which is typically performed between 18 and 22 weeks. Other than finding out the sex of your baby if you want to know , the ultrasound technician will be taking many measurements of your baby. Since the technician will be concentrating on the screen, they may or may not talk you through the examination. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, though.
This early ultrasound can provide reassurance that everything is progressing normally.

Early Pregnancy Scans
First trimester ultrasound is performed in the first months of a pregnancy. Pregnancy ultrasounds are performed mainly using transabdominal ultrasound. For many women, especially after 8 weeks gestation, sufficient information about the baby may be obtained with transabdominal ultrasound only. However, in the early pregnancy, the developing embryo is very small at 6 weeks gestation, the baby is only mm long and a transvaginal ultrasound may be required to get a better image of the baby. Transvaginal ultrasound is safe and commonly performed during all stages of pregnancy, including the first trimester.
That is the question.
Doppler Ultrasound The doppler shift principle has been used for a long time in fetal heart rate detectors. Further developments in doppler ultrasound technology in recent years have enabled a great expansion in its application in Obstetrics, particularly in the area of assessing and monitoring the well-being of the fetus, its progression in the face of intrauterine growth restriction, and the diagnosis of cardiac malformations.
Doppler ultrasound is presently most widely employed in the detection of fetal cardiac pulsations and pulsations in the various fetal blood vessels. The “Doptone” fetal pulse detector is a commonly used handheld device to detect fetal heartbeat using the same doppler principle. Blood flow characteristics in the fetal blood vessels can be assessed with Doppler ‘flow velocity waveforms’. Diminished flow, particularly in the diastolic phase of a pulse cycle is associated with compromise in the fetus.
Various ratios of the systolic to diastolic flow are used as a measure of this compromise. The blood vessels commonly interrogated include the umbilical artery , the aorta , the middle cerebral arteries , the uterine arcuate arteries , and the inferior vena cava. The use of color flow mapping can clearly depict the flow of blood in fetal blood vessels in a realtime scan, the direction of the flow being represented by different colors.
Color doppler is particularly indispensible in the diagnosis of fetal cardiac and blood vessel defects , and in the assessment of the hemodynamic responses to fetal hypoxia and anemia. A more recent development is the Power Doppler Doppler angiography. It uses amplitude information from doppler signals rather than flow velocity information to visualize slow flow in smaller blood vessels.
A color perfusion-like display of a particular organ such as the placenta overlapping on the 2-D image can be very nicely depicted. Doppler examinations can be performed abdominally and via the transvaginal route.
